Biography of His Eminence Chogye Shabdrung Rinpoche
The late H.E. Chogye
Trichen Rinpoche was the 25th Throne Holder of Nalendra Monastery.
H.E. Chogye Shabdrung
Rinpoche is currently the 26th Throne Holder of Nalendra Monastery.
The Tsarpa throne holders of the Nalendra Monastery
are all selected from the Kushang lineage of the Che Dynasty. Che meaning tongue,
as the family is believed to have descended from the dragon’s tongue. Ever
since the 1st Chogye Tripa (meaning the ‘Throne holder of Chogye’),
the tradition is to select the successor to the Tsarpa throne from the male
side of the Kushang lineage.
Upholding the same tradition, the late 25th
Chogye Trichen Rinpoche selected his grand-nephew, Tenpa Dharjie, to be his
successor and enthroned him as Chogye Shabdrung Rinpoche. Chogye Shabdrung
Rinpoche was born on 17 March 1981 in the Zhalu Village of Shigatse, Tibet. His
father, Tamding Tsewang, was the son of the late H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche’s
elder brother.
H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche sent a stamp and an edict
from Nepal, stating Chogye Shabdrung Rinpoche would be the 26th
Chogye Tripa. As such, at the age of 16, an enthronement ceremony was held for
Chogye Shabdrung Rinpoche at the Nalendra Monastery in Tibet. After the
ceremony, He then travelled to Nepal to meet up with H.E. Chogye Trichen
Rinpoche at the Jamchen Lhakhang Monastery (the 2nd Nalendra
Monastery).
For the
next few years Rinpoche stayed beside H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, caring and
receiving teachings, initiations, oral transmissions, quintessential
instructions apart from learning the unique ritualistic practices.
Then at the
age of 19, Chogye Shabdrung Rinpoche accompanied H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche on
a visit to the sacred pilgrimage place of Bodha Gaya, where He received His
ordination vow and became a novice monk from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. At
the age of 20, Chogye Shabdrung Rinpoche received the full ordination vow from
H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche and became a fully ordained monk.
Rinpoche
received many Tantra Initiations, oral transmission and quintessential instructions
especially Lamdre (Path & Result) from His Holiness The Sakya Trizin. Rinpoche
has also completed secret retreats on Bhoota Damara, Maha Vairocana,
Vajrayogini and White Manjushri.
In 2003,
in accordance with the advice of H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, Chogye Shabdrung
Rinpoche joined Sakya College. Under the tutorship and guidance of most
venerable Khenpo Sonam Gyatso, Rinpoche has completed His ten (10) years study
and graduated with a Ka Chu Pa Degree (Bachelor Degree) from Sakya College in
2013.
